At the start of a recent leadership development program with a group of emerging leaders here in Denver, Colorado, I asked the group how they would know if the 9-month program would be successful.
What would success look like for them individually?
Here are some of their responses:
“Success is making a positive impact in the lives of our staff, clients and all members of our organization… empowering people.”
“I measure my personal success through the accomplishments of my team.”
“I hope to learn more skills on motivating my team and taking them to the next level. Success to me is being able to mentor folks who report to me to help them become world class leaders.”
“I will help others attain their goals while attaining mine as well.”
If you look closely at these responses, you’ll understand that these people are true leaders. They “get it” because they know that leadership is about contribution.
Help others succeed, and you’ll succeed too.
Take care of others, and they’ll take care of you.
Contribute first, and others will follow.
